car10sgh – What I Use
This is just a short summary of the hardware and software i use at home and in the office. I use quite a lot of different hardware from time to time so i will try to keep it as up-to-date as possible.
Software: My primary operating system is Windows XP (with Service Pack 3). For a couple of months, I was hooked to Vista Ultimate but decided to go back to XP when it was in Service Pack 2. I won’t go much into explaining why i downgraded but will in the coming future. I use Firefox for browsing, Media Player Classic (with the Storm codecs) for video playback, Windows Media Player 9 for music playback, DVDFab Platinum for ripping VCDs and DVDs, Skype & Yahoo Messenger for instant messaging, Mozilla Thunderbird for checking email, uTorrent for torrents, Avast Antivirus for spyware/adware, Alcohol 120% for ripping and burning ISOs and RocketDock for desktop enhancements. I use a few other little utilities that make using my PC a whole lot simpler (eg. Stickies, Desktop Sidebar, etc…). Ubuntu is my second operating system and runs dual boot on a Core 2 Duo laptop with 2GB RAM.
At the office, I use Newtek’s VT5 all-in-one TV in a box solution. This is a complete video switching/editing/playback solution for guys who do broadcast and production. This is a neat software/hardware combo and I am pleased to be an avid user. We also use a lot of Media Player Classic for MPEG-2 DVD playback.
Hardware: My home PC is a custom built Intel Pentium D running at stock 3.4GHz. The memory is 1GB DDR2 running at 533MHz and the hard drives are a combination of a Maxtor 250GB and a Western Digital 400GB all running in SATA mode. I am currently using my ASUS’ integrated graphics to power a Benq projector as I sold my ATI X1300 512MB VGA for $100. I’m planning on upgrading to a Core Duo CPU and a motherboard with SLI support, and maybe add another gig to the memory.
